There’s a chic new resident on Long Jetty’s trendy strip.
It’s kitted out like a beautiful boutique but it’s not a store. It’s comfortable and stylish like a coffee shop, but it’s not a cafe.
It’s a dentist, and a visit to Luminous Dentistry is sure to be unlike any other trip to the dentist.
Formerly a car service centre and more recently a cafe, 441 The Entrance Rd is now an uber-stylish dentistry.
Cassandra Jenkins – half of the Long Jetty couple behind Luminous – is not just a hygienist extraordinaire; she is also behind the sleek Scandi design.
She wanted her workplace to be as beautiful as a modern home, asking “Why does it have to be unpleasant going to the dentist?”.
You may want to arrive early to admire Bek Halliday’s paintings on the wall – each month a local artist will be exhibited in the dentist’s gallery-like space.
Here are some more novel dentist experiences. While the littlies entertain themselves at the iPad bar in the kids’ corner, start the appointment with a cup of tea, an espresso or grab a bottle of San Pellegrino out of the fridge and kick back under the hanging field of Edison bulbs.
Amongst the art, chic knick knacks, cactii and succulents, you’ll find biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes, looking as pretty as they are practical.
There’s even an outdoor waiting room with a bench seat and green wall.
All these extra touches have been inspired by the European experience.
Cassandra says coffee may seem counterintuitive but if there’s ever a time to have dirty teeth, it’s before you go to the dentist to have them cleaned.
Her partner and fellow dentist Ben van Veenendaal can even do Botox and fillers, another leaf out of the Europeans’ very efficient and practical book.
The bright-eyed, pearly-toothed, go-getting couple have made a massive investment in the building and not just with the impressive Block makeover.
They’ve invested in serious equipment and technology including a 3D printer that can churn out a set of crowns in a matter of minutes.
During treatments, get whisked away into the world of Netflix with a flat screen hovering on the ceiling of the treatment room while noise cancelling headphones make a welcome addition to the prerequisite glasses and bib. You don’t have to be half way through a power clean to drool over Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love…
While it should be reward enough leaving with sparkling teeth, the piece de la resistance at this dentist is the goodie bag.
The contents are far from lollies (and more like a toothbrush and toothpaste), but it all plays into the ethos of Luminous.
Cassandra and Ben have thought of anything and everything to make a trip to the dentist not just palatable but pleasant.
Coastal Chic Tip: Luminous might look luxe but the prices aren’t unreasonable. The dentistry is an HCF partner but all health funds are welcome.
