With an unbeatable panorama over the Peninsula, Margarita Daze is one of the Coast’s best beachfront haunts.
Styled like a Hamptons house, the Ocean Beach bar and restaurant is all beachy whites, marine blues and seaside greens.
Since the stylish makeover, which saw it transformed from a Mexican cantina to something more befitting the beachside suburb, Margarita Daze has cemented its place as a coastal chic fave.
Inside the light-filled beach house, there are high tables with bright and cheery stools and cosy nooks with comfy cane chairs, decorated with cacti, succulents and striped cushions.
A spacious deck makes the most of the killer views over Ocean Beach to Lion Island and Sydney in the distance.
The enormous day bed in the corner offers a chic and comfy perch to take in the picturesque panorama.
With prime position overlooking the beach, Margarita Daze is where you want to be on a balmy evening or a sunny afternoon, sipping on a cocktail or an ice cold beer. They even offer the latest cocktail fad – frose.
It’s hard to beat the serenity when there’s a sea breeze tickling the palm fronds, sun shining on your face and a cold drink within arm’s reach.
On weekends, local musos ensure there’s a lively atmosphere to accompany your sundowner.
It’s worth booking on the weekend to dine on the deck or secure a spot under the lights to party into the night.
At the end of 2016 the property got snapped up by a couple of young couples that have a combined 50 years experience in the hospitality industry.
In a bid to inject some fresh blood into the location, Coasties Anna Horseley and Aaron Sinclair joined forces with Sydneysiders Katherine Marson and Kimball Towney who couldn’t resist the opportunity for a sea change.
Having grown up on the Coast and spent the past eight years managing a café in Gosford’s CBD, Anna said she loved being able to work within a Coastie community where she could get to know the locals. While she is the lovely blonde you’ve probably seen flitting around the joint, her partner Aaron works behind the scenes.
After two decades managing bars in Sydney, Kimball is relishing the change of scenery. As an account manager for hospitality juggernaut Merivale, his missus Kat is in charge of making it a go-to destination for weddings and events on the Coast. With a view as good as any of Justin Hemmes’ Sydney-based properties, Kat sees great potential.
Since the takeover, the menu has swerved away from Latin American towards the fruits of the sea – a more fitting menu for the waterfront location.
The nachos and tacos that families love are still there, but there are also seafood platters brimming with juicy prawns, rock oysters and succulent Alaskan crab claws.
The mussel bowls and scampi on rice both make a satisfying sidekick for an afternoon beer or chilled rose.
With its grey weatherboard and white trim, you can be forgiven for thinking Margarita Daze looks like any other million dollar mansion on the beach, except this is one property we all get to enjoy.
At Margarita Daze, the doors are always open and the day bed forever beckons.
Coastal Chic tip: It’s best to book early if you’ve got a group – it’s a great venue for special occasions.
